Statement from Emerge President A’shanti F. Gholar on the Confirmation of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court of the United States

Washington, DC—A’shanti F. Gholar, president of Emerge, the nation’s premier organization that recruits and trains Democratic women to run for office, released a statement following the confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court of the United States.

“We would like to congratulate Ketanji Brown Jackson on her historic confirmation to the Supreme Court of the United States,” said Gholar. “Judge Jackson is uniquely qualified, has a wealth of experience, and a deep seated commitment to promoting equity and justice in our judicial system. Her presence on the nation’s highest court will bring new insights that will shape one of our nation’s oldest institutions and leave a lasting legacy for future jurists to model.”

“Judge Jackson also brings with her a background and identity that no other Supreme Court Justice has ever had. America has always looked different for Black women who have been historically excluded from and discriminated against in our judicial system. Judge Jackson’s confirmation is an important step toward having our lived experiences represented and building an equitable justice system, but it’s not the only step we need to take. By empowering more Black women to seek critical judgeships, we will bring new voices and experiences to the judiciary, build a more representative bench, and continue to repower political structures together.”

Emerge has a commitment to seeing more women serving in judgeships across the country. The organization has trained hundreds of judicial candidates with a 61.7% win rate, saw 58 alums run for judge in 2020, and currently has 61 alums serving as judges, including four members of the New Mexico Supreme Court. Recently, Emerge received a grant to expand their judicial training in key target states.
