Deputy Communications Director 

Do you want to put your writing and social media superpowers to work to support the training of Democratic women to run for office? Do you have deep knowledge of communications and politics? Are you a word genius?

Emerge seeks a proactive, skilled, innovative, and passionate individual to help promote the amazing work of our organization. The deputy director will work with the Communications  Director to continue elevating the organization’s profile and engage in strategic communications planning. The deputy director will help manage the daily press operations that involves traditional and online media outreach, social media engagement, drafting communications materials (such as talking points, op-eds, press releases, and more), and communications to staff, affiliates, program alums, organizational allies, and other stakeholders.

The Deputy Communications Director is a remote full-time position that reports to the Communications Director.

What You’ll Do

  • Work closely with the organization’s communications director and other leaders to implement organizational communications vision and strategies;
  • Identify rapid response opportunities daily and work with the Communications Team to implement them;
  • Help oversee the organization’s press outreach, writing press releases, statements, and op-eds;
  • Prepare media briefings, talking points, and formal remarks for Emerge’s president, staff, and board of directors;
  • Develop a plan for op-eds and blog posts which will include writing, editing, and placing them in publications;
  • Help in crafting a public presence for Emerge that will include developing a  comprehensive series of stories about Emerge’s candidates, network, training  curriculum, successes, and supporters;  
  • Help oversee Emerge’s social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube, as well as Emerge’s website;
  • Assist the Development Department with written materials;
  • Work to ensure consistent branding of materials across all platforms;
  • Assist the Communications Director in generating earned media coverage of Emerge through proactive planning and rapid response; 
  • Support Emerge’s affiliates with communications work and website updates; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Who You Are

We are seeking candidates with writing and communications experience in political settings.  While experience in a similar role in the political sector is not required, a commitment to the advancement of Democratic women in politics is.

More specifically, you will have or be most or all of the following:

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including competency working cross culturally and in diverse teams to create an equitable and inclusive environment;
  • At least three years’ experience in communications, politics, and/or public policy work, including significant writing and communications responsibilities;
  • At least 2 years of managing staff or interns;
  • The ability to think proactively and creatively, and to develop cutting-edge communications strategies;
  • Excellent writing and editing skills;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Management and planning skills to pursue numerous concurrent projects;
  • An understanding of social media and how it is used to promote programs, campaigns, and an organization’s goals;
  • Familiarity with managing websites and social media as communications tools;
  • Familiarity with media monitoring and outreach systems;
  • Experience using Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or another graphic design platform;
  • Excellent follow-through and accountability;
  • Outstanding organizational skills and superb attention to detail;
  • A thorough grasp of the political process and the Democratic political community; and
  • Knowledge of women’s political leadership issues and political experience.

Salary and Benefits

Emerge offers a competitive compensation and benefits package which includes medical,  dental, vision, short-term disability, long-term disability, life insurance, and 401k retirement plan. We also offer a generous PTO plan and the opportunity to work with a dynamic team of mission-driven people. The salary range is between $75,000 and $85,000 depending on experience.
