Brianna Carmen Named Political Director at Emerge

Washington, D.C.— Today, Emerge, the nation’s premier organization that recruits and trains Democratic women to run for office and win, announced that Brianna Carmen will be its next political director. In this role, Carmen will engage Emerge’s elected alums, help Emerge’s affiliates strategically recruit for key seats in their states, and leverage national partnerships.

“We’re excited to have Brianna join our team, and help us further our work to change the face of politics in this country,” said A’shanti F. Gholar, president of Emerge. “Earlier this year, we launched our 15 year goals, centering our work on the New American Majority, repowering political systems, and fostering a lift as you climb culture to rapidly accelerate the number of women in political office that reflect changing demographics of this nation. I am confident that Brianna will leverage her experience to expand Emerge’s stellar track record and empower even more women to step up and run.”

“I’m thrilled to join Emerge and am ready to roll up my sleeves to get more Democratic women in office at every level,” said Carmen. “This is a pivotal time in our country’s history and the contributions that women can make in office to advance equity and justice for our nation could not be more vital. I look forward to bringing my skills and experience to enhance their political operations and increase their reach. Together we can show what it truly means to be a woman of color running for office.”

Before joining Emerge, Brianna managed the Campaigns Team at Voto Latino. She was a leader in their 2020 voter registration and turnout programs, working to register over 600,000 voters and provide tens of thousands of free rides to the polls, activate 260+ artists, celebrities and influencers, and mobilize nearly four million voters for the 2020 General Election. Her portfolio at the organization also included issues such as COVID-19 vaccine equity, protecting our elections and fighting disinformation.

Born and raised along the U.S-Mexico border in El Paso, Texas, Brianna Carmen saw firsthand a community that was impacted by so many key issues yet lacked widespread voter participation. This experience inspired her to manage a successful U.S. Congressional race in her home district while still in college. As the campaign grew into the most historic Senate race in Texas in over two decades, she transitioned into a leadership role that oversaw the engagement of millions of Texans in-person and online through events across the Lone Star State.

Emerge had more than 400 alums elected to office in November 2020, and currently has more than 1,000 alums in elected office across the country. The organization has trained more than 4,500 Democratic women to run for office and is committed to reaching 100,000 more women of the New American Majority over the next 15 years. There are currently 27 state affiliates, and the organization has impacted a total of 45 states, Washington, D.C. and territories.
