Rogue Supreme Court Continues to Overturn Precedent, Forwards Conservative Ideology

Washington, DC— Regarding today’s Republican-controlled Supreme Court of the United States decision banning affirmative action, Emerge President A’shanti F. Gholar issued the following statement:

This Court has once again overturned 50 years of precedent, just like they did in the Dobbs decision overturning Roe. It has proven to be fully under Republican control, and as such has no problem replacing precedent with rulings that are in lock step with conservative ideology.

The ruling comes at a time when our country is rapidly diversifying by race and ethnicity. These changes have already happened in the public school system, which became majority non-white nearly a decade ago.

With today’s ruling, the Court has set our country up to have a two-tiered system, where those with power, pipelined into running institutions from elite colleges, are majority-white, when the country is not. We must reverse course by electing leaders from a wide range of backgrounds until we have a representative government. Young people know this, which is why they are voting in greater numbers for Democrats

At Emerge, we are doing our part to make sure our elected leaders reflect the country. In the next 15 years, we will reach 100,000 women of the New American Majority (NAM) – Black, Brown, and Indigenous women, women of color, LGBTQ+, young, and unmarried women. NAM women leaders are already growing in numbers. In the last election, Emerge alums of the NAM had a 73% win rate.

Emerge is also working to elevate the next generation of jurists by training women to run for judge through our Gavel In program. Americans want people on the bench who are going to be fair and impartial, not implement partisan rule.

With this ruling, we have yet again felt the wide and sweeping consequences of elections. The Court can touch every facet of American life. Appointments last a lifetime. It’s a reminder that every election matters, and why we do this work everyday.”

Emerge’s new democracy building slate of training programs – Gavel In, Seated Together, and school boards – is uniquely focused on building reflective government for the first time in American history, as we cannot have a full fledged democracy without representation.

The organization is committed to reaching 100,000 women of the New American Majority over the next 15 years, fostering a lift as you climb culture for women in politics, and repowering political structures. There are more than two dozen state affiliates, and the organization has impacted a total of 45 states, Washington, D.C. and territories.
