Emerge New York Launches as Premier Candidate Training Program for Democratic Women

October 17, 2017

New York, N.Y. – With a surge of women newly interested in running for office, Emerge New York is launching as Emerge America’s 23rd affiliate nationwide. Emerge America is the nation’s leading organization that recruits, trains and provides a powerful network for Democratic women interested in running for office.

“We’re excited to launch Emerge New York and eager to capitalize on the incredible reserve of women leaders in the state,” said Andrea Dew Steele, President and Founder of Emerge America. “The Emerge America network is changing the face of power, politics and leadership all over this country. New York is ready for that kind of change. Emerge America is pleased to be endorsed by Onward Together and play an important role in the resistance. Democrats can’t win seats without well-trained, diverse candidates. Our mission to prepare qualified Democratic women for elected office and provide them with a vital network will lead to increased prosperity for families in New York and across the country.”

Emerge New York will be the premier political leadership training organization for Democratic women in the Empire State and will recruit, train and provide a powerful on the ground network for Democratic women interested in pursuing public office at the local, state and federal levels through its in-depth campaign training programs. New York ranks 20th in the country in terms of women serving in the state legislature with women making up just 27.7 percent of its members. What’s more, women make up only 10 of its 29 members of Congress.

“As the federal government attempts to systematically dismantle women’s reproductive rights and access to healthcare and attacks our core New York values, it is more important than ever before that women run for office and make our priorities heard,” said New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo. “I congratulate Emerge New York on their launch and look forward to working together to get more women elected to every level of government. Without our collective voices fully represented and fighting for a better, more equal future for all, we forgo the opportunity for a more perfect union.”

As part of the launch, Emerge New York hosted a “Taste of Emerge New York” on Saturday, Oct. 14 in New York City. Attendees learned quick, but critical, ins-and-outs of becoming a candidate and running a campaign. The organization has also been hosting fundraising events and info sessions across the Empire State.

The Taste of Emerge New York included a keynote address from New York State Senate Democratic Conference Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and a panel of speakers, which included Democratic Nominee for City Council, Carlina Rivera, the Women Caucus Chair for the New York Young Democrats, Veronica Aveis, Higher Heights Founder, Kimberly Peeler-Allen, Co-Founder of Pythia Public Affairs, Alexis Grenell and Women Elect Founder, Diana Cihak.

Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said, “With the election of Donald Trump and what is happening on the national level it is more important than ever to ensure that women stand up for our rights and protections. Emerge New York is an exciting new effort to get more women involved in the political process in New York where women continue to be underrepresented in the halls of power. When women get into leadership positions, our entire society moves forward and becomes stronger and fairer.”
