Emerge Alums Win Statewide in Massachusetts Primary

Washington, DC—Emerge, the nation’s premier organization that recruits and trains Democratic women to run for office, announced major victories following Tuesday’s primary in Massachusetts. The organization had 17 primary wins at every level, including Andrea Campbell for Attorney General and Diana DiZoglio for Auditor. The victories mark important milestones in Massachusetts as the most Democratic women ever were nominated up and down the ballot, including for statewide office, and Andrea Campbell will be the first Black woman serving in statewide office if elected.

“Last night’s primary showcased exactly what we can expect from Emerge alums in the general election this year,” said Brianna Carmen, Political Director of Emerge. “By connecting with their communities and running as their true authentic selves, Emerge alums were able to stand apart in crowded fields and win in some of the most competitive primaries in the state. This is the strength of our women and exactly why Democrats across the country are relying on women of the New American Majority to win as we look to hold onto Democratic offices and flip seats from red to blue. Congratulations to the powerful group of women who won last night and we look forward to seeing your success in the general election.”

These victories add to the overall success Emerge is experiencing in 2022. The organization already saw 40 alums win their elections this spring and before Tuesday’s election, Emerge alums had a 78% win rate in primaries. Including last night’s races, Emerge has more than 600 alums on the ballot in November running for federal, statewide, state, and local offices, and in some of the most competitive districts in the country. Emerge alums will be critical in gaining, maintaining and expanding majorities in municipal and legislative bodies, and blazing new trails as the “firsts” to hold their offices.

Other notable alums who won in Tuesday’s primary:

  • Sen. Lydia Edwards won her primary for re-election to the Massachusetts State Senate. She ascended to this position from the Boston City Council earlier this year with fellow Emerge alum Gabriela Coletta assuming her city council seat.
  • Judith Garcia won her primary for Massachusetts State House. If elected, she will be the only Hispanic woman serving in the Massachusetts State House.
  • Eileen Duff advanced through her primary for the Massachusetts Governor’s Council.

Emerge has trained more than 5,000 alums since 2002 and currently has more than 1,000 alums in elected office across the country. The organization is committed to reaching 100,000 women of the New American Majority over the next 15 years, fostering a lift as you climb culture for women in politics, and repowering political structures. There are currently 27 state affiliates, and the organization has impacted a total of 45 states, Washington, D.C. and territories.
