She is currently the U.S. Secretary of the Interior. She made history when she became the first Native American to serve as a cabinet secretary.
Secretary Haaland ran for New Mexico’s first congressional district in the 2018 election and became one of the first Native American women elected to Congress. She is a member of Laguna Pueblo and was the Democratic candidate for Lt. Governor during the 2014 general election.
During the 2014 general election, she visited every corner of the state and demonstrated her care for and understanding of New Mexico’s people and issues. Secretary Haaland has worked to increase voter turnout in underrepresented communities for more than a decade. As the Native American Vote Director for President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign she, again, traveled across the state, where she was instrumental in generating nearly a 60% voter turnout in Native American precincts with 89% of the votes cast going for the President.
Furthermore, she served as the state’s Democratic Party chair for two years, from April 2015 to April 2017, where she successfully retired the party’s debts. She holds a B.A. in English/Professional Writing from UNM, and a J.D. from the UNM School of Law. Secretary Haaland is a 2007 graduate of Emerge New Mexico and currently resides in Albuquerque.
