Laila’s previous roles at Emerge include the Director of Special Projects where she designed and built the infrastructure of WLE, which concentrates on the holistic roles and nurturing of leadership development and as the organization’s Expansion Director overseeing the expansion of the organization’s training program for Democratic women into new states
During the past 15 years, Laila has worked with elected officials, candidates, and organizations to develop skills in training, community engagement, and strategic outreach efforts. Laila was the Director of Women’s Engagement and the Democratic Women’s Alliance at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) during the 2016 election cycle and served as the Asian American and Pacific Islander Outreach Desk during the 2014 midterms. She has previously been the Director of Policy and Programs at APAICS, the philanthropic arm of the Congressional and Pacific Islander Members of Congress. She has worked with the Communication Workers of America’s campaigns and spent two election cycles with EMILY’s List in the Political Department as well as time in Congress, in Candidate Recruitment at Progressive Majority, and with the DNC’s Office of Independent Expenditures.
Laila received her undergraduate degree in Social Anthropology and Art History from Sarah Lawrence College and holds a Master’s in Arts in Art History, Connoisseurship, and the History of the Art Market from Christie’s Education.
Laila, her husband John, and their adorable toddler live in the District of Columbia where they pay more federal taxes per capita than any state without enjoying all the rights and privileges embodied in the U.S. Constitution including voting representation in Congress or the full local self-government accorded to residents of the 50 states. She is a devoted fan of the Mets, the Jets, and pie.
