Emerge Texas will level the playing field by recruiting and training Democratic women who want to run for office, but who may feel they lack the necessary knowledge or connections to mount a successful campaign.
Women make up 50.4% of Texas’s population, but only 20.4% of the state legislature. Texas currently has a single woman holding statewide executive office—Christi Craddick, a Republican serving as Railroad Commissioner. Only seven Democratic women have ever served the state in Congress, although it currently has the second largest Congressional delegation in the US . Furthermore, the percentage of women serving in the Texas state legislature has fallen since 2009. Despite having the second largest Latino population in the United States, there has been one Latina to ever serve in a statewide executive office in Texas.
This is why Texas needs Emerge Texas now!
