Emerge Communications Intern

Are you interested in learning more about how programs to elect women of the New American Majority work? Do you want to gain hands-on and real-world communications experience? Are you passionate about working in the political space to help get Democratic women elected and appointed to all levels of office?

Emerge is seeking a Communications Intern to support efforts of recruiting and training women to run for office. This individual will help with research, writing, social media, website updates, and other press and media projects. The Communications Intern will support the team with  administrative tasks as needed.

The Communications Internship position is an hourly position capped at 20 hours per week and reports to the Communications Director. The position can be based anywhere in the United States.

What You’ll Do

  • Help in outreach to Emerge alums for participation in communications activities;
  • Research election news, candidate trends and other current events for use in communications documents;
  • Pull and organize data for use by the Emerge communications department and its affiliates;
  • Help managing social media, including creating posts and graphics and posting to Emerge’s channels; 
  • Assist in managing website content and updates;
  • Help writing Emerge communications collateral, including press releases and talking points;
  • Manage press lists;
  • Provide support to Emerge’s 27 state affiliates as necessary; 
  • Filing and administrative work.

Who You Are

We are seeking candidates who are passionate about building a pipeline of women to run for office. The ideal candidate will be attentive to detail, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be open to learning. While experience in a similar role in the political or advocacy sector is not required, a commitment to the advancement of Democratic women in politics is.

More specifically, you will have or be most or all of the following:

  • You are passionate about the advancement of women in politics;
  • You have excellent interpersonal and relational skills, including competency working cross culturally and in diverse teams to create an equitable and inclusive environment;
  • You are a strong communicator with good writing skills and the ability to put them to use on professional tasks;
  • You have excellent research skills to review candidate and election information and organize it for use in communications documents;
  • You demonstrate a willingness to learn and when faced with a new challenge you dive in and ask questions as needed;  
  • You are committed to working collaboratively with members of the Communications Team and other departments;
  • You are familiar with social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram;
  • You are comfortable with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Additional Skills Preferred But Not Required  

  • Experience working in communications as part of school, a volunteer opportunity or other internship; 
  • Experience with the WordPress website platform; and
  • Experience creating graphics and other multimedia content on Adobe Creative Suite or Canva.

Salary

The salary for this position is $17.00 per hour for a max of 20 hours per week. The position will be a short-term role for 13 weeks.
